Chemo began as a huge man-shaped vessel built by an eccentric scientist, Ramsey Norton, to contain the chemicals from his failed experiments. These chemicals reacted with each other and resulted in the vessel coming to life. Chemo went on a mindless rampage, and was finally defeated by the Metal Men. Since it was an artificial lifeform, Chemo could not truly die, and it would return time and again to menace the Metal Men and other heroes.
