Samantha lived in a barbarian village in 229 AD, during the Roman Empire. When the Romans invaded her village, she was sold into slavery. For trying to smuggle letters to her family, Samantha was thrown in the dungeon. Eventually she escaped, but had trouble surviving on her own. She was rescued by a group of Druids who took her in, trained her, and gave her the Witchblade, following a prophecy which told that Samantha would come and rid their lands of the Romans. When she returned to her village, Samantha did not want to use the Witchblade for self-defense, lest she be accused of witchcraft, but she did use it to kill Roman soldiers raping a young girl. For this she was sentenced to death, but before the execution she used the Witchblade one more time: destroying her village and all of the Romans therein. She then went on to bring the rest of the Romans to justice.
