John Henry Irons II designed hi-tech weapons for a goverment contractor, however when some of his prototypes were leaked to a terrorist cell, he destroyed all his work and went into hiding in Metropolis. He got a job as a steelworker using the assumed name "Henry Johnson". Following the death of Superman, John Henry Irons built and donned a high-tech suit of armor, calling himself "The Man of Steel". After Superman returned, he simplified his name to "Steel". He is the grand-nephew of John Henry Irons, a hero in the 1960s known as John Henry Jr.
