Aiko is a "low-born" friend of Evan Calhoun's from childhood. When they were young, they were always getting into what the Monsignor refers to as "imbroglios" together. When Aiko is implicated in an explosion and Evan says he knows nothing about it, he is disgraced in the eyes of the Order for his misplaced allegiance.
