In the original 1900 L. Frank Baum story on which the Zenescope character Toto is based, Toto is Dorothy Gale's pet dog (a small black terrier), whom she brings to Oz with her, but in the comic book series, Toto is a wolf from Oz. Toto was previously the companion animal of a wizard (Faedhlan), who gives him the Veridian Scepter (a powerful magical relic) and tells him to run away in order to keep it safe. Toto runs to Kansas through a portal, and seeks protection from the girl, Dorothy, he finds there with whom he has an immediate bond. The Wicked Witch of the West, Lynessa, finds Toto and demands him back, but Dorothy refuses. In response, Lynessa transports Dorothy's farm to Oz and her adventures begin in earnest.
