Albert Desmond is a chemist suffering from a split personality, one a normal-looking person and the other a criminal. Calling himself Mister Element, he uses his knowledge to create exotic weapons, landing him in jail as a result of tangling with the Flash. In jail he learns about a Philosopher's Stone, which has the ability to transmute elements. He escapes and finds the Philosopher's Stone and with it, now calling himself Doctor Alchemy, restarts his crime career.
