Zed Avruskin gained powers similar to those of Superman while being raised and experimented upon by Russian authorities after the death of his Russian cosmonaut parents. Building a suit of armor that alled him to better use his abilities, Avruskin renamed himself "General Zod" and became dictator of the European nation of Pokolistan before turning his sights toward Superman.
