Dark Maple, a secret Canadian government agency, were trying to build a time machine. Although it didn't work, the experiment did have an unintended side effect on its volunteer, Floyd Bergson. He developed the ability to unstick a little bit of time, enabling him to create multiple versions of himself. When doing so, he typically formed a rapidly moving line, making him look like a human centipede. For a time, The Centipede worked as an agent for Dark Maple, but he later went rogue and acquired a Q-Dial, which when he dialed Q-U-E-D, would transform him into random super-villains.
