The hero known as Immortal Man-in-Darkness is secretly a squadron of pilots. Each flight aboard The Dragonwing, a living fighter plane, takes a year off the pilot's lifespan. The Chinese military hides this information from the public by portraying Immortal Man-in-Darkness as a single person. There have been at least five pilots of The Dragonwing: three unnamed men, Captain Han, and First Lt. Chen Nuo. Other pilots may have followed Chen Nuo.
