Andre Norton born Alice Mary Norton initially chose Andre Norton as a pen-name at a time when genre fiction was expected to be written by male authors, and changed her name legally in 1934. She has authored or co-authored 160 novels and was recognized as one of the leading authors of young adult fantasy and science-fiction. Norton accrued many awards, including the Boys' Clubs of America Medal, the lifetime achievement awards of the World Science Fiction and World Fantasy conventions, the Fritz Leiber and Jules Verne awards and the Nebula Grand Master award. The Beastmaster movies and TV series were based off her novel The Beast Master published by Harcourt, Brace & Company in 1959.
