Nicolas Mahler

Nicolas Mahler is an Austrian cartoonist and illustrator. Mahler is an autodidact, and started working as an illustrator soon after leaving school. Mahler draws for Austrian, German and Swiss newspapers, magazines and anthologies. He has published over twenty books, also in Europe and North America. His [Flaschko](app://series/95964)-comics were adapted as animated films and screened at various short film festivals in Europe. His comic [Planet Kratochvil #[nn] (2010)](app://issue/1527601) was performed as a puppet play in Switzerland, Austria and France. Mahler produced several literary adaptations in comic form, including [Alte Meister #[nn] (2011)](app://issue/1365821) (after Thomas Bernhard's novel), [Alice in Sussex #[nn] (März 2013)](app://issue/1155536) (based on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) and [Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften #[nn] (2013)](app://issue/1622141) (after Robert Musil's novel) as well as adaptations in 2020 of James Joyce's [Ulysses #[nn] (2020)](app://issue/2141026). In addition to his fictional stories, Mahler published [Kunsttheorie versus Frau Goldgruber #[nn] (2007)](app://issue/1335578), [Die Zumutungen der Moderne #[nn] (2007)](app://issue/1335646), [Pornografie und Selbstmord #[nn] (Februar 2010)](app://issue/1335624), as well as [Franz Kafkas nonstop Lachmaschine #[nn] (März 2014)](app://issue/1197439), as autobiographical comics in which he processes his sometimes absurd experiences in everyday life and in the comic scene.
