Cy Hungerford

Cy Hungerford began his career around 1903 at the age of 15 drawing cartoons for school and local newspapers in the local Parkersburg, West Virginia area. In 1912 he became a cartoonist for the Pittsburgh Sun (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). Hungerford did the syndicated comic strip, Snoodles, from 1913 to 1927, and reprinted from then to as late as 1943: Snoodles daily (Pittsburgh Post) 1913-02-23 - 1913-10-31 [Writer and artist.]; Snoodles daily (Associated Newspapers) 1913-11-01 - 19XX-XX-XX [Writer and artist.]; Snoodles daily (George Matthew Adams Service) 19XX-XX-XX - 1927-XX-XX; 1927-XX-XX - 1943-XX-XX [Reprints] [Writer and artist.] Allan Holtz speculates that Hungerford might have been the unsigned creator for the comic strip Adventures of Dotto the Want Ad Scout: Adventures of Dotto the Want Ad Scout daily (Pittsburgh Post) 1913-05-05 - 1913-10-17 [Writer and artist.] In 1927, Hungerford moved to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and continued as their editorial cartoonist. There Hungerford created "Pa Pitt", a cartoon symbol for the City of Pittsburgh. He would work for the Post-Gazette until 1977, retiring at the age of 89.
