Thompson started as a contributing cartoonist for The Milwaukee Journal (Milwaukee, Wisconsin). Later he became a staff cartoonist for the St. Louis Sun (St. Louis, Missouri) and in 1990, the State Journal-Register (Springfield, Illinois), a part of the Copley Illinois newspapers. Mike joined the Detroit Free Press (Detroit, Michigan) on November 9, 1998 and remains with the newspaper as of 2018. He has also drawn for USA Today. As of 2018, Thompson is syndicated though the Copley News Service to more than 400 newspapers and publications. His work is known to have been reprinted in Forbes, Newsweek, The New York Times, Time, and The Wall Street Journal.
