Dick Sprang

Richard W. Sprang was an American comic book artist, best known for his work on Batman during the Golden Age of Comic Books. Sprang was responsible for the 1950 redesign of the Batmobile and the original design of the Riddler. Sprang began his art career painting billboards, sign and movie posters in his hometown and worked as a staff artist for the *Toledo News-Bee* upon graduating from high school. He moved to New York City in 1936 and began illustrating pulp magazine stories as a freelance artist, moving to comics in 1941. He left the comic book field in 1963 and pursued a career as a rancher, guide, and surveyor.
