Ned Riddle

Ned Riddle served in the Navy on the submarine USS Piranha during World War II. To entertain the crew, he drew caricatures of his superiors for a weekly newsletter. After he returned to the United States, he graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and began painting in watercolors. As a commercial artist for the Dallas Morning News, he impressed his editors enough that they suggested he should syndicate his cartoons. He created Mr. Tweedy in 1953 and it was picked up for syndication in 1954 by General Features. In 1961, he resigned from the Dallas Morning News to work on his strip full-time.
