Frank Paul

Frank Paul was an Austrian‑born American illustrator. After emigrating in 1906, he worked in graphic design before editor [Hugo Gernsback](app://creator/5604) hired him in 1914 to illustrate *Electrical Experimenter*. From April 1926, he produced covers and interiors for *Amazing Stories* for more than three years. He followed Gernsback to his later magazines including *Science Wonder Stories* and *Wonder Stories*, and illustrated the cover for [Marvel Comics #1 (October 1939)](app://issue/556), the first issue from Timely, the predecessor of today's Marvel, in 1939. Considered by many to be a pioneer in the field, Paul's work is characterized by bold and dramatic compositions often involving bright colors.
