Robert J. Campbell

Early twentieth-century illustrator and cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune newspaper from about 1899 to about 1906. Campbell was the cartoonist of Lucy and Sophie Say Goodbye and The Career of Cholly Cashcaller (both in 1905). Campbell was "discovered" after winning a cartoon contest in 1896 for the Buffalo Times (Buffalo, New York). Campbell also did illustration work around 1897 and 1898 for the Buffalo Enquirer (Buffalo, New York) and the Buffalo Courier (Buffalo, New York) in 1899. After his time with the Chicago Tribune, Campbell continued as a freelance illustrator and later as an artist in advertising at least into the 1930s. Campbell returned to the Chicago Tribune for a time and was the head of it’s art department circa 1921.
