Jason Lutes

Jason Lutes is a comics creator whose career began in the 1990s. Following school, he worked for Fantagraphics in Seattle and then became the art director at the city’s alternative weekly newspaper, “The Stranger”. He created ‘Jar of Fools’ at the paper in 1993, the story of a struggling magician. He collected the strips himself (as Penny Dreadful Press), then they were collected by Black Eye. The complete edition was published by Drawn & Quarterly in 2003. His best-known work may be “Berlin”, set in the closing years of the Weimar Republic. Begun in 1996 at Black Eye, the 22-chapter work was finished at Drawn & Quarterly in 2018. He drew and Ed Brubaker wrote ‘The Fall’ in “Dark Horse Presents” (1998), collected by Drawn & Quarterly in 2001. He wrote and Nick Bertozzi drew “Houdini: The Handcuff King” (Hyperion, 20007). Since 2008, Lutes has been an instructor at the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont.
