Robert van Gulik

An academic specialist in Asian languages, Van Gulik was also a skilled diplomat, eventually becoming ambassador to Kuala Lumpur and Japan, in his spare time writing academic articles and books on Chinese languages, history and culture. He is best known, however, for writing sixteen detective novels about the historical character Judge Dee.
