Nick Brennan

Nick’s first strip when he started work for D.C. Thomson, in 1993, was a revival of the character Peter Piper in the Dandy. Further work for Thomson’s came his way with what turned out to be probably his longest running character, Blinky (a nephew of Colonel Blink from The Beezer). Other Dandy characters included Sneaker, Frawg, Hyde & Shriek, Noah's Ark, Pinky's Crackpot Circus and a revival of Brassneck. He still produces work for the Dandy annual each year, with Blinky still being around for the 2022 annual. For the Beano he drew the long-running strip Crazy for Daisy and was the artist for Billy Whizz for a number of years. In 2021 Nick designed Stevie Star, one of the new pupils in the Bash Street Kids strip, and drew a short run of 3-frame strips featuring him. Nick has also drawn Ginger and Willy Nilly for the Beezer, and drew a number of strips for Thomson's fun-size comics, with Nicky Nutjob, Stunt Boy, Salty Sam and Desert Island Dick joining his usual cast of characters. Nick hasn’t worked for any other comic publishers but has produced small ones as independent commissions. He produced a comic for Void, a contemporary art gallery in Derry, Northern Ireland, featuring the adventures of Arty, a young would-be artist, as he tried to emulate the artists exhibiting at Void. A new comic was produced to accompany each exhibition, each of which ran for a couple of months. The comic ran for 49 issues over the 10 years that the exhibition toured. Nick Brennan has stated that he doesn’t feel influenced by any artists, except possibly Charles Schulz (b. 1922) when he was younger. However he does admire the works of Albert Uderzo (b. 1927), Norman Thelwell (b. 1923), Carl Giles (b. 1916), Ken Reid (b. 1919), Ronald Searle (b. 1920), Ralph Steadman (b. 1936) and Gerald Scarfe (b. 1936).
