Maria Clara da S.R. Carneiro

Maria Clara Carneiro is a French professor with a PhD in Literary Theory from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (CAPES scholarship). She analyzes comics from a literary perspective, such as how the articulated plot of elements on the page reveals a poetic or metalinguistic process. In March 2015, she defended her thesis, "Metalinguism in Comics: Analysis of 'Contre la bande dessinée', by Jochen Gerner." She also holds a master's degree in French Literature, with the dissertation "Mourning and Writing in Roland Barthes' 'Camera Lucida'." She has conducted writing workshops and "potential" comics for UFRJ students with her advisor, Professor Ana Alencar, who is particularly interested in OuLiPo (Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle). Carneiro particularly researches its comics counterpart, OuBaPo (Ouvroir de Bande Dessinée Potentielle). She received a CAPES scholarship for a doctoral sandwich program at the Sorbonne University (Paris IV), under the supervision of Professor Jacques Dürrenmatt, author of the book "Bande Dessinée et Littérature" and coordinator of the Research Group on the Ninth Art (GRENA). She's translated comics for Barba Negra (in association with the publisher Leya), for which she also worked as an editorial producer; and was an assistant editor at Darkside Books. Between 2010 and 2013, she collaborated with the coordination of the “HQ na Maison” series of events at the Mediathèque of the Maison de France (RJ), organized a Study Day on Graphic Novels at the UNB (2012), participated in a panel at “Quantacon” (SP, 2012), mediated at “Riocomicon” (RJ, 2011), and presented a panel with Boulet at the International Comics Festival (BH, 2013). She produced the week of OuLiPo events (held at the UFRJ, Maison de France, Casa d’Italia, and ABL in 2009), part of the Year of France in Brazil events, with the presence of French and Italian authors (from the similar OpLePo); and invited Brazilian artists to the exhibition “OuBaPo: Comics at Maximum Power.”
