The on-sale date, July 2, is the publication date reported in the U. S. copyright registration. A print advertisement for the book states it premiered a day earlier, July 1, at the San Diego ComicCon.
The edition is described as "American Color Edition" on the copyright page. The pages feature the coloring of Dave McKean's original artwork. The original 1987 Titan/Escape edition presented the artwork in grayscale.
This was marketed as the first color edition in the world, and premiered July 1 at the San Diego ComicCon. All color editions should follow this one. The color art was updated and/or remastered again in 1997, and possibly once more in the early 2000s.
