D.C. Thomson

D.C. Thomson is a Scottish family firm founded in Dundee in 1905, and it is still owned by the same family. Comics are one part of a business that also publishes newspapers and magazines.

Its two best-known titles defined British children's comics: The Dandy arrived in 1937 and The Beano in 1938, and between them they ran for most of a century on a diet of anarchic short strips. The Beano is still weekly, and is the longest-running weekly comic in the world.

Commando, launched in 1961, is the other survivor — small-format war stories, still published on a regular schedule, and the largest single series in this catalog by issue count.
