Some of Timely Comics characters coexisted in the same world, as was first established in Marvel Mystery Comics #7 (1940) where Namor was mentioned in Human Torch's story, and vice versa. Starting from 1961 Marvel published a series of titles where events in one book would have repercussions in another title. These stories and characters are part of the Marvel mainstream universe, unless stated otherwise in the story. This Marvel mainstream universe is currently known as Earth-616 or as Prime Earth. The term Earth-616 was first used in "Rough Justice", a story credited to both Alan Moore and Alan Davis, published in July 1983 by Marvel UK in the anthology comic The Daredevils. For Marvel stories and features such as Spider-Man, Avengers, Iron Man, Hulk, X-Men, etc., this implies that characters and story settings from the 60s will be the same as the corresponding ones currently published in the Marvel universe designated as Earth-616.
